Batavia was a Dutch galleon that was launched in 1628. The length of the vessel was 56.6 m, with a width of 10.5 meters and a displacement of approx. 1,200 tons. The total area of the sails was approximately 1180 m2. It was armed with 24 guns on one deck. Batavia was a unit belonging to the Dutch East India Company and was built and launched in Amsterdam. It was assumed that it would be used primarily for the transport of goods on the route from the Netherlands-East India (today's Indonesia). Batavia set sail on October 29, 1628, in her maiden voyage and as it was to turn out to be the last voyage. However, on June 4, 1629, as a result of the deliberate actions of some of the crew, the unit entered a reef in the area of the city of Beacon in today's Australia. In the second half of the 20th century, many remains from Batavia were transferred to one of the Australian museums, and in 1995 a full-size replica of the 17th-century Batavia was created in the Netherlands.
