The Sukhoi Su-15 is an interceptor fighter, known under the NATO code name: Flagon. It is a single-seat, twin-engine medium wing in a classic layout. The first work related directly to the new T-58 aircraft, which was to replace the Su-9 and Su-11, began in the mid-1960s. In the first half of 1961, the design was completed and the construction of two T-58 prototypes (one for ground tests and one for for flight tests). However, development works were soon stopped due to increased customer requirements regarding the reliability of all aircraft systems, in particular the powerplant. In 1961, a new twin-engine variant of the fighter was created, which was called the T-58D. The first prototype of the T-58D-1 was flown on May 30, 1962. By the end of the year, the experimental fighter made 56 flights as part of the factory test program. On April 30, 1965, the Council of Ministers of the USSR decided to accept the Su-15-98 intercepting complex into service. The first pre-series Su-15 aircraft was flown on March 6, 1966. As early as 1966, Su-15 aircraft began to be sent to the operational regiments of the USSR military aviation. The Su-15 became famous for the infamous shooting down of a KAL Boeing-747 on September 1, 1983. For this reason, the plane was known as the "Jumbo-Killer".
