Varyag (formerly Red Ukraine) was a Soviet and later Russian missile cruiser, the keel of which was laid in 1979, the launch took place in July 1983, and entry into service took place in 1989. The total length of the ship is 186 meters and 20.8 meters wide. Full displacement reaches 11,500 tons and maximum speed up to 32 knots. The cruiser's armament currently includes: one twin 130 mm gun, three 3M87 missile and artillery sets, 16 P-1000 Vulcan rocket launchers and 8 VLS launchers for SA-N-6 (S-300F) rockets. The ship can also operate a single Kamow Ka-25 or Ka-27 helicopter.

Varyag (ex - Red Ukraine) was the third ship of the Sława class (another designation: Project 1164). The ships of the Sława class were designed and built as ships intended primarily for counteracting surface and underwater targets, but having considerable anti-aircraft defense capabilities. They were built almost in parallel with the much larger Kirov-class cruisers, as a complement. A characteristic feature of these ships is the presence of anti-ship missile batteries on the sides of the superstructure. Shortly after entering service, Red Ukraine was assigned to the Pacific Ocean Fleet, where it took part in numerous exercises. In 1992, it entered the Russian fleet, and four years later its name was changed to Varyag. The unit has represented the Russian flag several times on the occasion of various anniversaries and events. In 2013, Varyag was in the Mediterranean Sea to return to this area in 2016, when she became a key ship for Russian troops operating in Syria.
