The Battle of Issos was fought in November 333 BC between the Macedonian army led by Alexander the Great and the Persian army led by the king of kings Darius III of the Achaemenid dynasty. It is estimated that about 31,000 soldiers, including 5,000 cavalry, took part in the battle on the Macedonian side. The Persian army, on the other hand, numbered about 90,000 men, including perhaps as many as 20,000 cavalry. There was no doubt that the battlefield favored the Persians, whose wings were protected on one side by the river and on the other by the hills. Despite the numerical superiority of the opponent and the unfavorable terrain, Alexander the Great kept the initiative in his hand, and it was he who began operations in the course of the battle on his right wing, defeating the left wing of the Persian troops. He continued his attack and threatened the center of Persian troops, as a result of which Darius III ran away. Then, the Macedonian commander, together with his cavalry (hetairs), broke through to the right wing of the Persian army, causing them a complete defeat. As a result of the battle, the Persian army suffered huge, although difficult to estimate losses, and Alexander the Great was handed over to the mother, wife and two daughters of Darius III.
