The BMW 003 was a German WWII aero engine produced by Bayerische Motor Werke AG (BMW for short). It was first tested in 1940. The engine - in the BMW 003 A-2 version - had a weight of 624 kilograms and a length of 363 centimeters. It is estimated that about 500 examples of this aircraft engine were manufactured during World War II. It was one of the first mass-produced turbojet engines in the history of aviation

Work on the future BMW 003 engine began in 1938, and the first attempts of this completely innovative power unit for those times took place in 1940. However, they were very unsuccessful. It turned out that the engine is extremely malfunctioning, has unstable operation and required a huge number of corrections. However, in the course of improving the engine, new problems and technological difficulties were encountered and even when the engine entered production, it was not fully developed. In the course of production, several development versions were created that differed in thrust and weight, for example the BMW 003 A-2 model had a thrust of 7.83 kN, and the BMW 003 D version - already 10.76 kN. The BMW 003 engine - in various versions - served as a power unit for three German planes of the Second World War. It drove the Arado Ar-234 C, Heinkel He 162 and Messerschmitt Me 262 machines
